Calling All Classrooms!

We all know that we can’t live without water- but few people realize how little freshwater is available to us. Though our planet has more water than land, 99% of it is unusable by humans. According to the USGS, it takes 100 gallons of water to bring you one potato, 35 gallons for one cup of coffee, and for one ¼ pound hamburger...over 400 gallons! Clearly, we need water heros.

As part of the 4th annual Blue Heron Homecoming event (see attached flyer for details), we are sponsoring a classroom contest that will help us identify ways that we can all  “be a water hero”!

Here is how it works:

  1. Submit a picture, video, drawing, project, etc, to either Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #AkronWaterHero. Be CREATIVE! This could be a learning experience in conjunction with Earth Day, or a simple tie into your curriculum. You can access lessons from Project Wet as well. Just picking up a piece of plastic and putting it into a recycling bin is water hero worthy!

  1. Submission must include: School, grade, teacher’s name, brief description and the hashtag #AkronWaterHero.

There will be one grand prize winner and several honorable mentions. Winners will be grouped by elementary, middle and high schools. The best submissions will be featured on the Akron Waterways Renewed website and social media platforms. Submissions will also be prominently displayed at the Blue Heron Homecoming event.
