Akron Public Schools offered our students, in partnership with Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, participation in a special program, Akron: The City of Opportunity. Akron: The City of Opportunity is part of the APS elementary initiative known as Essential Experiences, sponsored by GAR Foundation.
This educational program was designed to support Ohio’s Learning Standards as well as provide opportunities for individuals to discover the world through the historically significant museum. Up-close, hands-on experiences are found to increase both understanding of and interest in educational concepts as well as increase social-emotional skills in students.
Akron Public School’s fifth-grade students visited Stan Hywet for a customized experience designed specifically for them. They visited the manor house, met staff members, and had interactive experiences to support college and career skills. Students experienced Akron: The City of Opportunity by exploring the trades, crafts, and careers of 1920s immigrant or migrant workers. They learned how the people managed daily life in their new country and record their findings in a student inquiry journal.
